HUMANITIESGovernment and Economics Course Description: Using Abeka "American Government" as the backbone of the course, the class will take full advantage of the presidential election year. Using as many mediums as possible to get a "full, concise, unbiased (if that is possible)" look at all running candidates, their standards and policies. We will interfuse "Uncle Eric's", "Are You Liberal, Conservative or Confused?" into our initial study of government. We will work to understand the meaning the Founding Fathers had of our Constitution and how we as a government/people have mis-interrupted the meanings and the directions that were laid out for us. This WILL be taught from a Christian perspective but we will be talking about "real life issues" as they relate to our lives and futures. We will be using Uncle Eric's books, "What Happened to Penny Candy', "What Happened to Justice", along with other supplemental material to complete the economics part of class. Both classes will be intertwined due to the effect one subject has on the other. The student will be required to offer their personal views and opinions in class discussion and on paper. We will be broaching many subjects that pertain to the candidates, our lives as Americans, and subjects that would not be considered appropriate to younger students. This class is for the mature 10th grader and up. It will meet the requirements for both a separate Government and Economics class, and prepare the student for classes in a community college setting or beyond. Students will be required to do extra reading along with class assignments. All work would be bound in portfolio form during the year. This will include the whys and how our country has been involved in; the World Wars, Korea, the Cold War, and Vietnam, up to the current Mid-East issues. (and other areas in-between). In our studies, we will talk honestly about war, its harshness, cruelties, and its consequences. We will look closely at how these events have shaped our country and our lives, while putting a strong emphasis on “knowing our past so as, not to make the same mistakes in the future”. The class will be encouraged to learn how "their" generation can and will change America. Students will be expected to do Internet research and additional reading where needed for projects.
